A few weeks ago, I was seated next to a fifty-something-year old man on a flight to the quaint, friendly town of Port Elizabeth. Perhaps ‘seated’ is not the most accurate word. Given to a local airline’s Sardine Seat Arrangement, I was squashed next to John* and, as a result, was obligated to converse with the fellow. Chilled vibes. I love talking to strangers. (Sorry mom.) The Unattractive Confident Girl

There are many things in this world that I don’t understand, politics, global warming, the intricacies of knitting…. but the one thing that I understand the least is the psychology of the unattractive confident girl, a combination of good food, bad genes and far too much Dr. Phil [more]

There’s nothing more frank a form of advice than what you get from a total stranger. Lawrence and Themba only met an hour ago, but already Themba has some pertinent advice for his new acquaintance.“Don’t mess it up, bra! Do not mess it up! If you want  it, there’s all you need here. Don’t go break up with her just because you miss her. Fly over there once a year.”The subject is long-distance relationships. Lawrence’s girlfriend is studying at Oxford. Oxford! Doing a PPE degree in politics, philosophy and economics. [more]

The most embarrassing day of your life arrives. Your hands are sweating, you’ve drunk far too much in order to calm the nerves and your relatives are looking at you in a far too sceptical manner to find amusing. Your 21st has arrived and you are wracking your brains trying to recount all the distasteful things you’ve done in the past few years that may just surface at this very awkward time. Ranging from random napovers to waking up…. [more]

The Black Girls’ Cry

Too brown almost black, so black almost blue, so blue almost purple. This Baby Born certainly will not do. I look to my left and feel the sudden urge to rip that porcelain white skin of the girl next to me and spreading it all over my tiny body generously. I could never understand why the skin colour on the black dolls would always be so terribly wrong. Looking partially satisfied with the braaid doll to avoid seeming ungrateful, I hug my mother and give her a wet kiss on the cheek. [more]
